Language learning and teaching in virtual worlds
With the excellent help of Graham Davies' relatives, the official ownership of the CALICO/EUROCALL VW SIG Ning has now been passed over to yours truly. One issue that we had been experiencing was that our Ning was maxxed out at 150 members, the most allowed in the cheaper version of the Ning. I pitiched in some money to upgrade us, so now the Ning can have up to 10,000 members. I think that should cover things nicely. I'm looking for input on future directions of the Ning and I would like to share one idea for feedback.
Since we can have so many members on this Ning, it seems to me that this could serve as a primary location for all the SIG groups for both CALICO and EUROCALL. At this point, the VW SIG is still the only one that is actually combined in this way, but it seems to make perfect sense to me that SIGs should always cooperate between CALICO and EUROCALL.
Now that we have this larger Ning, and added features, it would be possible to make this Ning site the "CALICO/EUROCALL SIGs Ning" to be used by all the joint groups. The "Plus" level of the Ning allows for subgroups within a single Ning (so a subgroup for VWs, one for CMC, one for Teacher Ed, etc.), and also allows integration of things like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.
What do you all think? It seems to me that we have a lot of EUROCALL and CALICO members who belong to multiple SIGS, and that we also have many members who belong to both groups. It seems that this could be a very good way to create a dynamic community that would include all the SIGS and encourage collaboration between these two important groups.
Thoughts? Ideas? Is there anyone here who is currently heading one of the other SIGS who could help with making this happen?
