Language Learning and Teaching with the aid of Technology

Second Life launches its new Second Life Viewer 2. It looks a lot easier to use than the current viewer - it leans quite a lot on standard Web browsers with which people are likely to be familiar, and it may shorten the learning curve for newbies.

Here is Linden Lab's Introduction to Second Life Viewer 2 on YouTube:

See also Nergiz Kern's wiki, Teaching in Second Life, in which she describes and demonstrates some of the new viewer's capabilities.

This video clip of an Interview between Robert Scoble and Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Labs, includes a brief preview of what the new viewer looks like. It also includes a lot of general information on what SL is all about.

I received a message today, 1 April, to download the release version of SL Viewer 2. Linden Lab has now made this the primary viewer, but Version 1.23 will still be available for the time being.

I have updated my tutorial materials on SL Viewer 2, which can now be downloaded from Section 14.2.1 of Module 1.5 at the ICT4LT site:

Thinking ahead to my pre-conference workshop, Introduction to Second Life, at EUROCALL 2010:

I am not sure at this stage if I will be using my current SL tutorial materials, which can be downloaded from the ICT4LT site at, or whether I will base my workshop on Second Life Viewer 2. It depends on the date on which Linden Lab releases Viewer 2 in its final form. I am in the process of familiarising myself with Viewer 2 and I have made my new tutorial materials available in draft form here:

I am udpating the new SL Viewer 2 tutorial materials every day. Feedback is welcomed.
