Transfer of ownership of EduNation III Island

The transfer of ownership of EduNation III Island from Gavin Dudeney (Dudeney Ge in SL) to Randall Sadler (Randall Renoir in SL) has now been completed. Randall is busy right now, 27 October 2010, changing the terrain of the island. All the buildings and contents have been removed, so you won't find the EUROCALL and CALICO HQs in their usual place. But it won't be long before we are up and running again and in new accommodation. Keep an eye on this blog for updates. If you are…

Help for Newbies

I have not been very active in Second Life for the last few days, and I am not sure how active I will be during the SLanguages 2010 conference. I underwent surgery, an exploratory laparoscopy, on 8 October 2010,…

Chinese-English Language Exchange on SL

Greetings All,

I'm an English language tutor from New Zealand. I've just started incorporating SL into my language classroom. In order to take full advantage of SL, I'm looking for volunteers who'd be interested in meeting in SL to have a 5-10 min chat with my students in English (as they're learning English), then in Chinese (as the volunteers would be learning Chinese).

I'm not sure if it's feasible at all, and I'm aware of the time zone differences. But I thought I'd start… Continue

EUROCALL 2010 - a great conference

I got back from EUROCALL 2010 in Bordeaux a couple of days ago. It was a remarkable and memorable conference in every respect. The quality of the presentations was very high, and the social events were excellent. The food and wine at the Gala Dinner were up to the standard that one would expect in Bordeaux, but we also had a lot of fun laughing at ourselves in the post-dinner karaoke session. Many of us did not get back to our hotels before 2.30 in the morning! It was so thoughtful of the…

Announcing Critically Minded Podcast

Well, it's not actually brand new, but it did start just last semester. I am interested in teaching students critical thinking skills at a variety of levels and from a variety of approaches. This year, I became Program Chair of our new Critical Thinking JALT (Japanese Association of Language Teachers) SIG. I am beginning an M.A. in Educational Technologies and TESOL at the University of Manchester from this September 2010. I hope that my interest in teaching critical thinking skills and my… Continue

AVALON discussion on Viewer 2, 18 August 2010

I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting on Viewer 2 yesterday evening in the AVALON sim. I know I talked far too much, so thank you for listening so patiently. I hope you found some of the tips useful. I certainly found your feedback useful: what you did not know about Viewer 2, what you like and what you find unfriendly or irritating. I have completely revised my tutorial materials on Viewer 2 to take account of the changes that have been introduced into Version 2.1.0, which…

EduNation III---Big changes coming soon!!!!

Greetings all,

After trying for a couple months to find a group to help me take over EduNation III (which was due to close in September), I've taken the leap and decided to just take it over on my own!!!

This means that:

1. It WILL stay open

2. Rent prices will not increase

3. I plan on still having existing housing for offices---but I'll put a holodeck on each plot with more than 10 housing styles to choose from!!

4. I'll also have a number of free pieces of… Continue

New Ning pricing plans

This is to let you know that we have signed up for the Ning Mini pricing plan, so this Ning will continue to exist in its current form. We are therefore not migrating to a new network. The fee is modest at $19.95 per year, plus a discount for early payment. This fee is to be covered by EUROCALL. There is a drawback, however, as the Ning Mini plan restricts us to 150 members:

At present we…

Second Life - the long goodbye (re Gavin Dudeney's blog)

There is a very lively discussion taking place right now in Gavin Dudeney’s That’SLife blog in a thread headed Second Life - the long goodbye. Gavin has decided to say goodbye to SL, at least in terms of continuing to play a role in using SL for teaching and training. He has decided that SL is not the most suitable environment for educators, citing technical problems, the unfriendliness of Viewer 2…

Language teacher communities in Second Life

When I started exploring Second Life in 2007 to find out whether it had to offer something for language teaching and learning, I didn't know anybody in SL and only made slow progress, which was very frustrating. You can read more about my first steps and experiences in these blog posts:

Are you on EduNation? Want to be??

Hello all,

I just returned from the CALICO conference in Amherst, MA, USA, and our Virtual Worlds Special Interest Group meeting went very well! At one of the pre-con workshops I gave on holodecks Graham Davies (Groovy Winkler in SL) joined in via SL, as did a few other who are part of this Ning!

One of the topics we discussed was how we could save EduNation III, where the CALICO and EUROCALL Headquarters are currently located. We talked about some ideas for how to… Continue
