Language Learning and Teaching with the aid of Technology

The Journal of Distance Education recently published a highly comprehensive article titled "Creating a Virtual World Mindset: A Guide for First Time Second Life Teachers" by Sharon Stroeger.

I would strongly recommend anyone who is still relatively new to SL to read this:

Thank you Bernadette! Glad to see some research is done in the field of education and SL.

Keep the links coming :-)

There are two more publications I would recommend:

1. My own Introduction to Second Life Viewer 2 - which is aimed at the absolute beginner and takes you step-by-step through the basics of SL:
This is also downloadable from Section 14.2.1 of Module 1.5 at the ICT4LT site (which I edit):
You will find many other links to resources on teaching in SL in this section.

2.Getting started with Second Life, JISC: The first part of this PDF document briefly covers the basics of Second Life, and the second part focuses on the more advanced skills of building and scripting, designing courses in Second Life, as well as offering useful practical advice on setting up Second Life in an educational institution:

I would also recommend looking at Nergiz Kern's SL Experiments wiki, which she uses for sharing ideas on using SL for teaching languages:

And make sure register for the forthcoming SLanguages 2010 conference, 15-16 October:

Hi Bernadette, do you happen to have a copy of the article? I tried to find it but i couldn't.

Hi, Stella! I just accessed the article that Bernadette mentions. The link worked for me:

You could also take a look at my introductory tutorial materials on Viewer 2 in Module 1.5 (Section 14.2.1) at the ICT4LT site:

Here is the direct link to my tutorial materials:

There are many other links in Module 1.4, Section 14.2.1.

The JISC materials on getting started in SL are also useful:

Stella, I think you have to access the article online. I can't see a download facility on the Web page, but you could convert it to PDF format using a tool such as doPDF:

Sharon, thanks a million for sharing this article; it really helps in my line of work.

thanks for the link

Thanks Bernadette :)
