The Journal of Distance Education recently published a highly comprehensive article titled "Creating a Virtual World Mindset: A Guide for First Time Second Life Teachers" by Sharon Stroeger.

2.Getting started with Second Life, JISC: The first part of this PDF document briefly covers the basics of Second Life, and the second part focuses on the more advanced skills of building and scripting, designing courses in Second Life, as well as offering useful practical advice on setting up Second Life in an educational institution:

I would also recommend looking at Nergiz Kern's SL Experiments wiki, which she uses for sharing ideas on using SL for teaching languages:
